Scripture: Zechariah 4:6; Acts 1:8
“Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” — Zechariah 4:6 (KJV)
Devotion: More Than Our Own Strength
The church is called to do more than gather for worship, organize ministries, and carry out programs. We are called to be a people who depend on the presence and power of the Holy Spirit.
Jesus promised His disciples that they would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them (Acts 1:8). The early church understood that its mission could not be accomplished through human effort alone. They devoted themselves to prayer, sought God’s direction, and trusted the Spirit to guide and empower them.
The same is true for the church today.
We can plan meaningful services, develop effective ministries, care for those in need, and reach out to our community. These things are important, but we must never become so focused on what we are doing that we forget to seek the One who gives our work spiritual life and purpose.
The church has a responsibility to pray for the presence and leading of the Holy Spirit in everything it does.
We should pray for the Spirit’s presence in our worship, so that our hearts are drawn closer to God. We should pray for His wisdom in our decisions, His love in our relationships, His guidance in our ministries, and His power as we share the gospel. We should pray for our pastors and leaders, asking the Holy Spirit to give them discernment, courage, and faithfulness.
Most importantly, we must be willing to follow where the Spirit leads. Praying for His presence means more than asking God to bless our plans. It means surrendering our plans to Him and asking Him to accomplish His purposes through us.
A church that prays together for the Holy Spirit’s guidance is a church that recognizes its dependence on God. We do not want merely to do things for God; we want to do what God desires, in the way He desires, through the power He provides.
Before every service, every ministry, every important decision, and every outreach effort, may our prayer be simple: “Holy Spirit, lead us, guide us, and work through us for the glory of Jesus Christ.”
Reflection Questions
- Do we pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance as faithfully as we plan our church activities?
- Are we willing to change our plans when God leads us in a different direction?
- How can we make prayer for the Spirit’s presence a greater priority in our congregation?
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. Forgive us when we depend too much on our own wisdom, strength, and plans. Help us to seek Your presence in everything we do as a church. Guide our worship, strengthen our ministries, direct our decisions, and fill our hearts with love for You and for others. Give our pastors, leaders, and congregation wisdom and discernment to follow Your leading. May everything we do point people to Jesus Christ and bring glory to Your name. Teach us to pray faithfully, listen carefully, and obey willingly as we depend on Your Holy Spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Thought for the Day: A church’s greatest strength is not found in its programs, resources, or abilities, but in its dependence on God and its willingness to follow the leading of the Holy Spirit.
